So I watched both Belfast and Coda last night. Belfast was great. Great performances all around. It’s an autobiographical film of Kenneth Branagh growing up in Belfast in the late 60s. Judi Dench was fabulous, of course. It’s a comedic drama and I chuckled often. Jamie Dornan and the woman from Outlander also star and they were both fantastic in it as well as the child who is supposed to be the young Kenneth. He was hilarious.

Like you I had known nothing about Coda going in. I just put it on cold without reading anything about it. Oh and I just loved it! It’s about a teenage girl that’s the only hearing member of a deaf family and she loves to sing and they just can’t connect with that at all. If you have a family movie night watch this one. It’s on Apple TV.

I don’t think either one of these movies stands a chance next to Power of the Dog in the same category as that one just stands well above but these are both wonderful films worth a watch.

Like you I didn’t care much for Nightmare Alley. It was entertaining enough but Oscar worthy, nah? Being the Ricardos was just ok for me. I didn’t love NK as Lucy although others have praised her performance. Judi Dench will probably win because she’s Judi Dench. I think Dune will probably take one of the lesser categories. I didn’t love The Lost Daughter (no real redemption found there) and I couldn’t get through The Eyes of Tammy Faye. I also couldn’t get through Macbeth although I probably will try again. I watched the first 20 minutes of it and shut it off because I just wasn’t feeling it. It was just too stiff and too weird. Sorry for all the comments, was trying to plunk my thoughts down as I was listening to you speak.

I totally agree they had to pad this list because it’s 10 pictures. Why the heck is it 10 pictures now, anyway? Don’t Look Up should not be on the list. It’s way too preachy, left wing and divisive and just preaching to the choir of its target audience. Plus it’s 45 minutes too long for a film that’s all satire. I haven’t seen Belfast or Licorice Pizza yet but I really want to although I’m hoping like you for a Power of the Dog sweep. Hands down that was the absolute best picture of the year and all the performances were amazing. I feel like many of these categories are a bit padded this year and they just included the big names. I’m not interested in West Side Story at all. I haven’t seen King Richard but I’ll probably watch it eventually. KS in Spencer- amazing performance. I do hope she wins.
