Apparently I didn't think about this movie enough. I appreciate all of the different takes which have made me think about it more. Initially, I took most of it at face value: David is a baby-killing psycho who came back into her life because psycho and she did him in because he had it coming. But perhaps another theory is that the baby was entirely an invention of David's or that the baby was real but died of SIDS, a miscarriage or stillbirth. David then manipulated the death to his advantage to continue his sick emotional torture. His return into her world, imaginary or not, could have been triggered by her daughter's upcoming independence.

Hello there, Just watched it a few days ago and the ending has been bothering me, just the very last few minutes mind you, when we have Abby back and the baby. Till then I thought I had it figured out, pretty literal I was thinking. She was mentally fragile (still) after being horrifically emotionally and physically abused by David. My take was/is that it all happened like it's shone. Btw didn't Margaret's office mates SEE her talking to David in her office? And were like who the hell is that? Is he the reason she's been acting crazy?
So I think he did kill Ben, and she fled. The Resurrection is that David shows back up in her carefully cultivated/managed life. HE still thinks he can manipulate her, and he can and does...till she finally pushes herself to break free "in a sense" and take HIS manipulations literal about Ben and (this is where it gets blurry) "in her mind" is able to remove/rescue Ben after killing David in a very real/literal gruesome manner.

So I "thought" that at the very end we'd get a glimpse through her facade and see that she was really in a padded cell or in a rundown/dirty apartment, perhaps holding the remains/bones of Ben? But no, it just closes in on her smiling face and eyes, although perhaps a bit maniacal?

So I don't know what to think lol Performances were top notch for sure. But IF her friends/colleagues actually SEE David, then that puts a certain spin on what happens after.

Thoughts?

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve seen this film so I had to gloss over the post a bit. I came to the conclusion that he was not real or no longer alive and that her daughter leaving was the catalyst for her coming apart but I definitely agree with what you are saying about trauma as someone who experienced it at a young age and that I still carry those scars. You can’t just say she’s crazy and be done with it. She had something very real and very horrible happen to her.

Sorry, your interpretation doesn't make sense to me in some parts and ignores too many facts (and even important parts of the movie). And it seems you don't really understand a) women b) mothers c) traumatized victims of dv and mental abuse or the dynamics of these relationships OR abusive, toxic people. ;-) And no, I've been trying to find a hint that nobody but her is able to see david and nobody interacts with him, but only with her - but that's not the case. The Woman in the coffeeshop brings a cup of Tee to his Table and even talks to him, when she just came through the door and didn't even reach the table. Well, at least in the german version, but I'm quite sure they didn't change the whole script, just because it's a different language. And they announce him to her at work. he even talked to the secretary. Anyway - still I have to admit it's possible, that he's dead, but nonsense to me.(...) "I don’t know about you… but nothing I heard that she did was unforgivable." wow. seriously? well, then I also won't give you a hint. Maybe you'll understand, one day. She even said it. But even without words... some things don't need to be explained - actually. (btw, did you notice the signs of the onset of mature milk on her shirt in front of the mirror? Actually it only happens when a woman is pregnant. And in cases like this, pregnancy could be re-traumatizing and trigger an episode, although I still don't want to believe in the "imaginary David" version. But even her daughter mentioned an episode.) And no. David is not like a god. David acts and appears like the typical abusive but charismatic, manipulative ex-partner and stalker. People with Psychopathy or NPD can be just like that. "he methodically dismantles Margaret without raising his voice." again: wow. it's quite frustrating how well (t)his fleapit works with you. of course he does. that's what psychopaths like David are in control of. Even if he wouldn't be real, PTSD (or borderline as result of abuse) would explain this but this was just a typical thing that happens between a victim of abuse and her manipulative abuser. And yes, it's not unusual that the triggered victim looks like the only crazy one - and david would have agreed with this opinion. After all that's what people like David want everyone to think. And obviously you never had a stalker - that's the thing about stalkers: they appear whereever you are although it seems impossible. Well, as for the end... we can agree to disagree on whether David was an imaginary resurrection or real. ("resurrection" could also aim at her dead baby, because suddenly, after 22 years it haunts her again) but the more I think about it, the more I think that she took her life (or, at least, was ready to die) just before she met with david in the hotel room, she talked about how "pleasently dispensable" you are, once you're a mother. And David told her: "today it's 22 years. Come. Come to your son." - and it seems, she accepted this invitation. These strange, lucky visions often appear, when someone died... as a symbol of the peace (or hell) they found in death. But I'm not sure about this scene, because I still think there's something else possible with this whole cannibalism-story. But that doesn't matter, now... it's a great movie. And there are several interpretations possible. But to me, it's quite impossible that he wasn't real.

Also, I think it’s very possible that since her daughter was about to leave home for college that this was the catalyst for her becoming unglued.

She mentions that she had her first baby at home without going to the hospital, etc so possibly he was never registered as born. She then kills David after he kills the baby and absconds to start a new life. She’s super protective of her daughter so she may not be able to handle the thought of her leaving so she falls into old behaviors and becomes totally undone. I think this makes the most sense rather than believing he ate a baby and then she cuts it out of him decades later.

See, I still have an issue with this film going in the “is she crazy or not?” category. Even if she did kill him way back when and then took off and started a whole new life, some of what she said happened to her rings true and she was emotionally abused and downright tortured.

Oh and I think you mean an “intervention.”

What this film captures completely is someone who has a very compartmentalized life. The only person allowed to get close to her is her daughter. She keeps everyone else at bay choosing to have a strictly physical relationship with an unavailable man. She dives into her work but doesn’t really get super close to anyone there. She goes home and calls her friend with benefits if she’s so inclined. People who have been abused do things like this. It’s a defense mechanism.

That 7 minute monologue should land Hall some awards. It probably won’t because I’m cynical like that but it should.

i can totally see your theory as being correct but i do want to point out a few things about battered women and cult members.

the men in control can easily regain that control and they don't necessarily need to raise their voice or use violence. after all, that isn't how they got control in the first place. they get it by being charming. in that same vein, her saying that leaving was unforgivable is completely normal given her traumatic past and being under his spell

now i did wonder at some point if she had actually already killed david because it was so hard to tell if their interactions were real or not. but i still wouldn't dismiss her as unreliable. i believe her story. it's just perhaps she omitted something at the end (on purpose or not, i'm not sure)

also it is odd to me that her bf doesn't take her to the hospital on his own. like come on guy

(also i mentioned in the discord: did she kill herself in the hotel scene or what actually happened there? was the letter to abbie a suicide note?)
