The loudest negativity like this is pretty much always a projection of something from that person's life. Glad to see you've taken the high road and taken it in stride, i'm sure it is tough to read at any point on something you've worked so hard on. Keep on keepin' on and doing you, man! You've clearly touched the hearts of many of us fans out here, and we're loving it! In the past years it seems that people have lost the ability to disagree with something or someone yet still remain amicable and respectful, nice to see that you (and many of your lovely readers/commenters) can buck that trend, it is truly refreshing and one of the reasons i visit your site so often. This type of response is exactly the breath of fresh air needed to invalidate these silly comments.

Keep up the great work, Taylor! :)

Taylor, I think you have been in IT about as long as I have. I remember back in the early 90's the ircs and I could see the future, so to say in regards to civility and the internet. I like you, have avoided social media as much as I can. One reason is because I work in IT and I don't want to spend my whole entire life in front of a monitor (or three monitors!). The other reason is because I despise the hostility that permeates through anonymous internet posts. I'm old school, from Houston where you don't say (or write) something that you can't back up in person (yes, in person without a gun). I really believe that ignorance is bliss in regards to social media. I don't post it, see it , therefore it doesn't exists. I love your website and I am so glad I came across it during Covid. No, we don't agree on all movies, but that's the whole entire point. I want to be able to agree or disagree with a fellow moviegoer and still have a interesting in depth conversation. I want to learn learn something and I'm not afraid to listen to opposition. I like it, as long as it's civil. That is why I support your website and what you do. Keep on keeping on....

Hatred is the buzzword these days. And people love to spew hate to make a point, or prove they know more than anybody, or just to get a reaction. I believe Trump opened up the vein of hatred, making it okay to voice despicable racist comments in front of anyone. Hatred never went away, but he alone destroyed public common courtesy, kindness and empathy towards others. Agreeing to disagree has been left in the dust. Breaking the law? Doesn't matter. Facts, who cares. I am saddened that our little group and our leader were verbally attacked over a film review. How sad is that. But we will go on and watch film to be entertained and leave the world for an hour or two.

Shel- it’s interesting to me that you mention tailgating because for the past few years I’ve found people on the road to be super aggressive and I have way too many near misses lately. Multiple times a week! I don’t know if people are just stressed over the pandemic or what but I’ve found the road to be even more dangerous than it was and see people doing things I just don’t understand. Just yesterday I had a guy cut me off with no warning and almost clip my front bumper and then he had the nerve to curse me out! Meanwhile he didn’t even look to see if anyone was there before switching lanes and didn’t bother to use his signal at all.

It reminds me of this old movie they made us watch when I took the 6 hour course for my license years ago. I think they still use it. It’s a super old cartoon with a Goofy looking character that turns into a demon of sorts once he gets behind the wheel. Mr Walker and Mr Wheeler or something to that effect. But it’s true- it’s like some people turn into crazies when they get in the car and just have no regard for anyone else at all.

I truly never understood the motivation of doing something like this person has done. Ridiculous language aside, if you don’t care for something, why stay? Not only that but why go out of your way to leave a hateful comment? I guess I always try to be diplomatic even in situations where I don’t know the people I am conversing with at all. I want to solve issues, not create or instigate them. This person not only read one post he or she didn’t like but also came back to do it again. If I don’t like a particular site I click the X and don’t come back. It’s truly that simple. I lurked here for a long time before leaving comments. I watched a ton of films from the site before I felt like I knew you enough to communicate with you and I’d like to think we are friends now. Except the new normal is to be a tough guy or gal on the net thinking words don’t matter anymore. They do.

taylor, i love this post. i love it because of how you flipped the script. i find myself regularly asking why people are hostile or violent or aggressive. my conclusion is simply: they need therapy. we all do. even therapists need therapy. the pandemic did a number on us, if we weren't already hurting before. unfortunately, therapy is not accessible for everyone, plus there is stigma and also people don't fully grasp what it is and how it can help them. and not every therapist is compatible with every patient, so it can be challenging finding the right match.

but there is so much autopilot hostility. e.g. mean comments on twitter, tailgating while driving, stuff that i don't think people are necessarily consciously choosing to do, just that they've been doing it and never questioned it. a profound lack of self awareness, if you will. i deal with tailgating every single day and i wonder to myself, will it ever get better? will they ever realize they are making me feel uncomfortable and unsafe? would they even care if they knew? and i don't know. all i can do is try to find ways to let it roll off my back (shoutout to my therapist). some days that's harder than others. the world is pretty hostile but some parts are nice. thank you for having this site and the discord so we can connect with one another over movies!
