I’m hard pressed to say I loved this film just because it’s so devastating to watch. But I absolutely believe it’s a must see. Even between WW1 and 2 there was a big difference in the weaponry used. Bayonets? We don’t do hand to hand combat like this anymore. Plus as the years pass, these wars get glorified and the focus is always on the winners. I think all those soldiers on the ground regardless of what side they were fighting for were all equal. They were all fed information that glorified what they would actually be doing and in some cases, out and out lied to. This movie is a prime example of this. I found the following of the uniform in the beginning such a genius idea. When it’s handed to the soldier just coming in to the fight he is told it was probably just too small for the previous soldier when he finds the name tag. All the while while the fat guys not fighting are gorging on good food and deciding the fate of so many. There were no real winners on that battlefield because even those that survived were scarred for life and there was just no way they could go back to any semblance of normal life. So I think this film is a must watch for all just so we can remember the human toll regardless of which side we are watching the perspective of.
