I loved the opening of this film. I took it to be the filmmakers telling us that they want us to know they are just telling us a story but that we should believe in it anyway. And I did. Florence is definitely having her moment right now and this is a fantastic performance.

I watched this film and Tar very close together so it made me think about women and power. In Tar we have a much more powerful but also abusive woman who is taken down a few notches but not quite all the way even though she deserved it. Here we have a woman from a completely different era and she really has no power and is at the mercy of some men. So what does she do? She sacrifices her entire life to take some power and to save this girl with a bit of trickery which I’ll forgive because in the long run, it’s worth it. She is broken but she takes those broken pieces and cobbles back together a family. It’s beautiful. I’m also going to skip the abuse part because if you’ve watched the film then you already know why the poor girl is starving herself. Her family made her believe that somehow she was the one in the wrong!

Then at the end we see again it’s just a story but one that really touches the heart. Just beautiful.
