I know I am a little late here, but I just came across your website and this review of Skinamarink. First, I really enjoyed this movie and knew what it was before hand. Second, you got a few things wrong in your synopsis. It wasn't Kaylee who put the knife in her eye, it was Kevin. Kaylee's face (mouth & eyes) had already been taken by the entity by then because she demanded to see her parents and disobeyed it. Then later the entity told Kevin to get the knife and put it in his eye, which he did. That blood you saw was from Kevin doing that and then you heard his painful screams. Near the end it was Kaylee whose body was fading and disappeared and then Kevin was left alone to deal with the entity alone. If you remember the very end Kevin was asking if it had a name then you saw it's grainy "face" followed but the "576 days" graphic which either meant that he had been alive with the entity for that duration or in some sort of coma, dreaming/imagining what happened to his family and of the entity.

I finished it finally after 3 tries and I had the audio cranked to hear every last thing and I still have no idea what I watched. I agree with the guy above me. Too many things just left unresolved and making no sense.

MORE SPOILERS!

My first thought when watching the movie (at the local independent theater with crappy audio, unfortunately) was, "Wonder what TH is saying about this?"

I was set up mentally to expect exactly what this is, and thus to not like it, so I went in properly prepared. As frustrated as the arthouse editing could be, there's no escaping that this movie got under my skin, and still haunts me enough to want to see it again.

That said, almost NOBODY, including you, Taylor, is mentioning the odd bits that don't seem to fit into the general narrative:

The 911 call about Kevin falling down the stairs;

The mother sitting on the bed;

The 576 days;

The goldanged Legos;

and a few more I can't remember. It's one thing to be abstract and to leave crazy, even contradictory clues, but it's quite another thing to just string a bunch of unrelated things together and call them a movie. That's sloppy and lazy, imo.

Thanks for being here,

Alan

The thing is, I usually do enjoy films like this. Maybe I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind the day I flipped it on. I will give it another shot just because I’m curious to see what happens. I won’t blame you if it sucks-or maybe I will?

No no no. If you can’t handle the first 25 I’m not telling you to push through. It’s art house to a fault. That’s a fact. But if you were to have gotten into the fact that the setup is in order for you to be put into their shoes, then yes. But doesn’t sound like it. So no… don’t force it.

I skipped over the spoilers as I guess I’ll have to finish this one eventually but I’m watching it on my bedroom TV which is only 32 inches and I’m only 4 or so feet away. I had no issues with the audio but it got a bit tiresome just seeing little feet scuttling around on my screen on grainy video. I watched maybe 25 minutes of it before shutting it off. But if you’re saying I should finish it, I will try.
