I feel like Scorsese was throwing his weight around with this film. I mean everyone involved had to realize the length was unnecessary to tell this story. Should it have been told? Absolutely. I mean there’s the book it was based on but not everyone is an avid reader so it is an important movie.

I liked the radio show homage ending. It didn’t quite fit with the rest of the film but at least it summed things up succinctly. I mean it would have added at least another hour to act it out!

Cutting at least an hour from this film still could have told this story well. It’s sadly simple enough what happened. And the justice for those involved? Barely touched it. There were many more complicit in this scheme. Just a few paid the price for the murders of so many. We are still such a young nation and have so many awful stories of how we actually used, abused and killed to get where we are today. Much of it is a shameful history.

Leo lobbied hard for the part of Ernest. He was originally supposed to be cast as the investigator played by Jesse Plemons. Was the real life guy this stupid? Did he not realize he was murdering his wife? I can’t really answer that even after watching this. I’m guessing he had an inkling being she was literally dying in bed after he started drugging her. Plus the casual way he and Hale spoke about murdering others in Mollie’s family had to give him some kind of idea what Hale’s endgame was here. Plus how did he not realize his own head would be on the chopping block eventually?

Overall I can’t say I liked or enjoyed this film. The bad guys were so bad that there was no redemption to be found for any of them here. This is a disgusting stain on our history and the casual way murder was talked about and performed in this film really left me feeling awful. I’m glad I saw it because I was unaware of some of the details but I would never watch it again.
