I think it gets points for more than that. Sometimes movies are just nice in their simplicity. You know what other movie was simple recently but not like this film at all? The Killer. In that film we are basically just watching him do exactly what he set out to do in a methodic way and it all works out exactly how he wants it to without any crazy twists or turns. Just simple entertainment. It doesn’t always have to set your brain on absolute fire to be time well spent.

I think you have it stuck in your head that this film is trying to be the ones you mentioned and I don’t think it is. I think it stands alone as a well crafted story about relationships between people that might otherwise not really get to know one another.

I’m not sure this is any kind of walk through. It’s more of a rant. I think this film was great in its simplicity. The acting was superb by Paul Giamatti and Da'Vine Joy Randolph as the grieving mother who lost her son in the war. You didn’t even mention her here at all and I found her storyline the most touching. When we talked on Discord you mentioned no resolution about the teacher and women but in the end I think he chose instead to break free of the prison he put himself in and decided to go travel and become a part of the world outside of the school which hopefully would open him up to being in a real relationship. Angus learns a thing or two about relationships as well from his teacher and the cook instead of just viewing them as people put there to serve him. Not everything has to be tied up in a neat little bow as life doesn’t work that way. I think you are trying too hard to compare this to other films you think it’s trying to emulate.

I really enjoyed it. I found the story to be complete and not messy at all. I didn’t feel anything was stretched out or padded. You have to remember this is a boarding school where rich people send their kids to keep them away from home so they probably wouldn’t have even thought twice about letting them go on a vacation with another student as long as they didn’t actually have to parent them themselves.

Is it the best film I’ve ever seen? No, but I still think in a sea of films where most are barely mediocre, it does stand far above them.
