This film could simply have been called “Gaslighting” which pretty much explains it from start to finish. But I think a lot of it is ambiguous and we are meant to draw our own personal conclusions from it. I explained how I read it but I’m sure others have different opinions.

Where in this post did I ever say I would explain it? I did narratively untangle it. So there is that. And I didn’t even get a single hazzah for that brilliance. It wasn’t easy to do.

I think they were both manipulating her. They both were from the beginning. Done. Explained. Next!

Meg is an unreliable narrator due to her trauma and she does have hallucinations like the swimming scenes which is why Scott is trying to gaslight her further to take control of her money. But if you remember she finds and uses the broken plate as sort of a totem so she can try to understand what’s real and what’s not. She knows the plate is real and that he lied to her about it so what else is he lying about? There’s no time travel or loops in the film. When we see her screaming in the beginning it’s actually her breaking free from the house and Scott- not her kidnapping as we see when the film ends and the screaming scene is shown again. It’s just a scene shown out of order. The kidnapping has happened in the past and we don’t see any of this in the film- it’s just expressed in Meg’s trauma and alluded to in their conversations.

There is no easy explanation for this film and there are many things left unanswered such as if Scott was actually involved in the kidnapping plot or if he just uses it afterwards to try and break her down. I’m still leaning toward him not being involved in it but still using it as an opportunity to get her money and run off with Madelin. Scott and Madelin were gaslighting her to the extreme trying to make her seem insane by lying about the dog, the mother and basically everything. I’m not sure if there ever even was a mother or if it was part of Meg’s hallucinations since she kept seeing a woman in the woods. Meg clearly has PTSD but is not as delusional as Scott is trying to make her think she is.

I think that Scott thought she was dead or decided to run off to the house in the woods after she got kidnapped (maybe to avoid the press?) and that’s why he says he didn’t get the video from the kidnappers as he got it a month later since he wasn’t home. He tells Meg he didn’t receive it because he didn’t want her to know he stopped waiting for her and instead took up with Madelin. I think when Meg gets free (possibly because the kidnappers realized Scott wasn’t going to pay up?) that’s when he and Madelin hatch the plot to drive her over the edge and steal her money.

Anyway, this is my best shot at explaining this film!

Sorry but your review did not give me an explanation of the film!!

The swim scene with the three of them and Meg drowning?

Is Meg in a time loop as the film began and ended the same way? Why would Madelin lie about her sick mother?

And what bothered me was when Scott broke the door to get to Meg and his holding her down. That's abuse. Run away I screamed at the tv!
Sorry still dont understand the whole thing.

I’m still waffling on whether the husband was involved in the abduction. I’m tending to think no because of the fact he didn’t want to tell Meg he got the video a month late because he was busy having an affair with his “cousin”? That’s another thing I’m not sure about- if they are actually related at all. Remember the painting showed a blonde headed girl? This movie was super confusing but I think it’s not really about the kidnapping. I think it’s about Meg’s trauma. And gaslighting. Lots of gaslighting. The dog, the plate, the sleepwalking, the old lady in the woods, etc!
