Love the comment, and love that this little movie is still getting readers and comment love... it's an Indie favorite of mine for it's inside out brilliance, and Hollywood defying writing etc. Just such a great little film... a movie that still has me wondering about that ending and about which way was up. Rafia, welcome to the community! Can't wait to see what other thoughts come in the next 10 years!

Wow Youseef’s chess analogy and explanation makes complete sense. Adam has a the real David is a real human. Frankly, the Castle guy just wasn’t scary enough. He came off as quite dumb, and they must be pretty low budget at the NSA if he was the ONLY one watching the story unfold 24/7. Weren’t there other warehouses being watched. And with all the fancy AI they have at their disposal, they have a crummy human being watching the moves?? Not plausible. Anyone notice how in one scent Adam quickly looks up at the camera knowing his ‘warehouse ‘ (with Joy on her day visit) is being watched? That was a clear indication looking back that Adam was either highly advanced or a human. The level of awareness was higher than AI David who never once looked up. Sperm was implanted, and Adam deflected Joy’s comment to what was in the syringe in a pretty humanlike manner. Have to go back and see the post credits as I also missed the positive pregnancy test. Actually makes it open to sequel. But I’m thr last one writing and it’s been nearly 10 years since movie was released , so unfortunately, no Part 2…hope someone thinks of making it tho. Peace out to all the amazing thoughts and feedback and to Taylor for creating this space for all of us in different spaces of time to discuss it. In 2025, AI is more relevant than ever…so the movie DID do
something right by engaging these intellig ent discussions.

First off, I didn't see the post credit scene until after reading this review, thanks for the heads up.

Joy - not a robot
David - a robot (possible cyborg, but probably not)
Adam - not a robot

Joy isn't a robot because in the post credits scene, you can see trees outside the window, meaning she isn't in the same building, or neighborhood, which would place her outside of wifi range. She also did not hear the high pitch noise David heard on moving outside of wifi range.

David is a robot, or possibly a cyborg, with the computer part removed from inside him. No there was not a "palming" of the device to fool Joy, there's no reason to.

Adam is not a robot because how would he be able to retrieve the David unit from outside wifi range?

The movie was slow, but engaging enough to finish. I don't know at what point I began to suspect the role reversal, and the possibility that both were robots, but it did become a possibility at some point, to me.

Artificially insemination, but who's sperm? That is the puzzled look Joy had in the post credit scene.

David's final scene facial expression, he has a boys maturity level, and "girls" are a new concept for him.

Other observation. The original supposed robot was named Adam, subconsciously pushing us to think of Adam and Eve, yet they couldn't be so transparent to name Joy, Eve, so they gave her a different, three letter name. This keeps the subconscious pushed towards the Adam and Eve comparison, and reinforcing us to believe that Adam was the robot.

Still not the most "twisted" ending. That still belongs to High Tension.

I don't know if this was mentioned as the observations cannot be read in one short sitting but here is my observation. I believe this was in the scene where Adam starts preparing the receptacles for the sperm. The camera gets a close shot of Adams hand and I noticed there were a couple of large cuticles that needed to be cut and the hands were definitely human. My first thought was that this was mistakenly overlooked when making the movie, but at the end of the movie, I did believe that Adam was human because of this.

I now agree both are robots. The David model is more advanced. Remember, David ate dinner and breakfast with Joy and also managed her emotions suavely. Adam's robot variant had a disastrous problem with food (or at least his stomach did) as well as childlike jealousy and possessiveness. Perhaps David's more recent program even includes viable reproductive content (either human DNA or a more advanced hybrid), which we learn post credits. I think both robots will be continued for future testing and tweaks, David for the human subtlety and Adam for the violent decisiveness. Excellent film. Would like to see a robot protagonist not based on murderous Hal or the clingy child from AI.

Dark Hair saying "You're afraid of me" may have been him noting that Blond Hair evolved fear, but it was primarily him developing the plan to chase him so that he would leave the range of the wifi.
The part when he tackles him and puts the screwdriver up his nose is pretty key. Also when he pulls the box out of him afterward. Much of that, to me, is all to pull the wool over Castle's eyes.
To reset some of Blond Hair's functions (whether they be memory, or company loyalty...), and allow the sperm to go unnoticed. Perhaps even to gain control over Blond Hair, when he was previously programmed to be loyal to Castle. Maybe as well as trying to escape by planting the evidence (baby) in Joy (for the purpose of escape), he also altered the final product of Blond Hair so that it would blow up in Castle and the NSA's faces?

Castle obviously not caring about what happened to Joy means he's not the father, which means somebody is: Dark Hair. So he is human. That's the purpose of the post credits scene.

Nevermind these nano-sperm ideas. There's nothing in the workspace or the plot to indicate that, IMO. I mean he has a metal skeleton, and a pump-action penis. His most impressive part is his programming. He can't generate or grow from nano-sperm.

Dark Hair had social issues, whether just from the combination of spending formative years in isolation working, then spending the rest exchanging mannerisms with an android... maybe also autism. Not to mention he was supposed to be emulating AI.

I maybe wrong but I always thought Adam was human. I took it that he was the one that went MIT and was recruited by Castle. To me that explains his social awkwardness By the fact that he has never left that room in 10 years and I think also he did the social awkwardness on purpose to throw Joy off. Due to his personality trait, he would not say no to moving on to NSA like Castle wanted; it's also what he is used it. I feel like Joy's baby belongs to Adam, why would he not use his sperm?
