just want to comment on something that happens very early in the
movie. when the police first show up to question Evan, Malloy
tells Evan that they received a tip about a grey Volvo with an Addison College sticker on it and they are following up on that
tip. Well then, a tip from whom? Legitimate tip? phony tip?
Intentionally misleading tip? oh, the possibilities.

I loved Malloy’s proof that the chair exists (“What Chair?”).

If you know anything about quantum physics – nothing is real until we look at it (a photon or electron is simply a probability field that only collapses into a particle when you actually measure it) Our universe is made up of possibilities until you make some choice then the math/probability brings the thing into existence according to the rules this universe is programmed with. We don’t actually know what is true and what is real – we only know what we perceive and believe to be real. Memory is very plastic and very unreliable – we are constantly shaping/altering our memories each time we look at them and file them away again. Evan thinks deeply about what is real and what is true and as that kind of deep thinker he realizes that he has no idea whether the memory that he has on file is closer to “the truth” or are the fantasies about what he could have chosen to do “the truth”?

Evan killed Joyce. How do we know? The director cleverly shows us his memory with Joyce on their walk, and she tells him she loves him. Then … Anna says the same thing in her car, Evan’s eyes open wide, and he has his negative flashback of Joyce. But wait, there’s more … even after making amends with his wife at the dining room table, promising to tell the truth, he’s still lying about his bruised knuckles. Psych majors, tricky people, ya never know what they’re up to … that’s THE message and theme of this movie.

Wow. Some of these comments are quite interesting for lack of a better word. Such strong feelings over a movie that’s simply there to entertain us.

As for lie detector tests, I don’t even think they are legally admissible because many things can affect a response so while they can be a useful tool in some instances (Maury Povich?!) they could not be used to secure an actual conviction because they are measuring the body’s response to the question and not really determining if a person is lying or not.

Plus there are methods a person can learn to actually change the way their body responds. A complete psychopath could probably lie without feeling anything at all so if we relied on these tests in court instead of actual evidence there would probably be more guilty folks running free and nervous innocent ones sent to jail.

It’s so funny to me that this post was made 5 years ago and is consistently the one I get the most emails about from comments here. People seem to feel very strongly about this film!

I’ll reserve all comment until you read more around this blog to get a sense of even who I am or whether or not I was just messing with you. But to say you don’t understand this movie or my elders seems a foregone conclusion.

Hahah. This entire movie questioned the concepts of justice and presumed guilt and even our own assumptions about what we think of ourselves. The lie detector is the least of our problems.

Oh and this thread will be just fine I’m thinking. It’s survived worse!

You seem awesome by the way. You should frequent other great movies I’ve written about as well.
