I think Maggie knows the handshake because she is Abigail's mother and the father taught Abigail the handshake at a very young age. Maybe Maggie was a sex traffic victim and baby Abigail was born in that environment. Maggie was drugged a lot and that caused autism in daughter. But Maggie may have been dumped while drugged and it took her a while to regain her senses. So she started cult to hide from sex traffickers and started looking for her daughter. The main goal was to kidnap her daughter from bad people, aka Abigail's father/captor. But Maggie had lied, stolen, cheated her way back to society after recovering from being trafficked. Not as fun as time travel, but makes just as much sense. Maggie prefers living fantasy world where people help her nicely.

These films about a person who claim they are from the future or they are from another planet or they are Martin Guerre are all the same and all follow the same predictable pattern - a character makes a bold statement, sometime questions the person's sanity, something weird happens, the skeptical people question their own sanity, the end comes and the audience is supposed to question everything but it's not really a mind job, it is more of a con-job on the viewer and the film is not as smart as it thinks it is.
Let's say there was a character in a hospital who claims, "I can fly", and every sane-minded person says "no that person can't fly" but in the end the window is open and the nurse sees something go past the window. Does that mean the film is brilliant and mind-bending or was it just manipulative and a waste of time because the plan was to get to that point all along? I think it is the latter and that is how I feel about these movies.
That said, I enjoy many of the movies on this Mindjob list, especially Bad Times at the El Royale, Exam, and Infinity Chamber. One of my favorite film s recently was The Platform which was made after your list came out.

Yet why all the sneakiness behind that photo as she opens it in the hotel room? As if she knows what she's about to look at is going to be meaningful and important. Even if she were lying to Lorna, why show that scene then in the hotel room? All I can think is that the justice department lady is also being fooled by a higher source.

I think the detective was fake, some cover. Why a detective would have her stuff hidden in a Bloomingdale's box and to be so suspicious checking the hotel room. Maybe she was from the future and wanted to caught Maggie to avoid a change in the timeline... The photo was black and white probably Photoshop... I didn't saw Maggie looking in malicious way to Abigail, Lorna was fool to no ask for more evidence against Maggie. At the end the movie show us how someone so sceptical can be the most influenced and doubt the truth whatever it could be in the movie. I want to believe.

Wow, really loved this movie. How is it I’ve been living in a world where mama mia and Medea movie make millions of dollars and I’ve never heard of movies like this till like 2 weeks ago, crazy. Totally agree with the she wears sent to kill her mom theory. That would explain the choice she brought up and why it seemed like she took such a special interest in him. Literally the only reason I can think off why starting a cult would be how I wanted to spend my time after traveling through it is to stay low key, protected, and get some loyal helpers till I could carry out my mission. Otherwise she could have used specific knowledge she knew from the future to convince masses of people but she didn’t want that kind of attention. I think the whole cult idea might have just been because she knew there was a teacher at her mothers school who making, or in her time had already made, a cult movie and that was the best way to get close to him. Or she’s crazy and that handshake is from the One Direction fan club or something.

I love, absolutely love, this line of logic for this movie. Just everything about it. Might even tweak the post to reflect this in more detail.
Thanks Misster Anderssson.

Maggie is likely going back to kill her mom so that the civil war never happens. The DOJ agent goes back in time to make sure she doesn't succeed. That explains all the weirdness in the hotel from the DOJ agent. She is also from the future and sick.

The only thing I didn't like about this movie was that, while we see everything from Peter and Lorna's POV, we aren't allowed to see what the woman from the Justice Department told Lorna about Maggie. To me, that's just cheating, and not in line with the rest of the movie. We're given everything from the POV of these two characters, but then the movie decides to just omit that one vital piece of the puzzle? It didn't feel natural or right to me, and it was the one place I felt they fumbled a bit in keeping the balance between "is Maggie a charlatan or a time traveler?" Otherwise, I loved it.
