Hey there Daniel –
You walked into this movie with a totally different set of expectations! I went in with a pretty high assumption of where it was going to go. I knew Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Life of Pi, etc etc) was involved, and so I expected tons. I also really thought the premise was good, that coupled with Weta meant good special effects. So maybe I hoped for more. But it wasn’t the acting, or Will Smith, or even the CGI that let me down. Rather, it was the screenplay. I just felt like this was the most vanilla screenplay imaginable. I knew where this thing was going from moment one, all the way to the back stretch. I knew Sr. was going to kill the bad guy after making a thing about the moral debt one would bear for a lifetime. Everything really.

But that says something about how you go into a movie. If it’s an airplane watch… wow I cut the movie serious slack. If it’s an opening night movie theater watch… oh, you better bring the goods. Guy Movie Night out? Just blow stuff up and I am happy as a clam. Date night with the missus? Just tie that sucker up with a bow dangit! hahahah. But this movie for me, just didn’t succeed. Sure, it’ll be a great plane watch for many many people. Hotel watch? Definitely! But it just didn’t work for me.

Looper is an interesting movie. I talk a little bit about it here: https://taylorholmes.com/2015/10/05/the-20-best-time-travel-movies-ever/ – But yeah, the CGI of placing Bruce Willis’ younger face on Joseph Gordon-Levitt definitely gave it a similar feel.
