THiNC. Movie Spotlight 131

REPENT! Here comes the technicolor locusts and the advent of the cinematic desert! Don’t believe me? Read this. This guy knows his shizzle. I trust him. And you should too. Anyway, eat, drink, be merry, because tomorrow we weep. The film eclipse is coming. And so, to still bring you movies, today’s spotlight has a little bit of everything. Diamonds in the rough. Movies off the beaten path. These are all recent movies… but they aren’t August, per se. Can I interest you in a watch whilst we are at it?

BRIGHTWOOD – NOW

Thanks @Nancy for this tip. Might be movie of the month. Right up there with 11 Minutes Ago (which I loved, but need to write up), Beyond the Infinite 2 Minutes (which was gloriously good), and Discontinued. “Jen and Dan and their marriage isn’t going so well. So much so that Jen can’t stand her husband. While out on a jog around a lake the couple begin to talk about their failing marriage but soon find themselves lost as the hiking trail seem not to have an exit and they repeatedly return to the same spot. And if that is not bad enough, a silent hooded killer is tracking them down.” Can we talk about the fact that this movie needed to hire a professional writer to create this synopsis for them??

SNOW GIRL – Now

This is a sleeper series that shot to the top ten around the world, but not so much here in the states. A six ep series set in the Spanish port of Malaga. A young girl goes missing during the celebration of the Three Wise Men parade. A journalist takes up the challenge, and voila, we have a show on our hands. I watched this show a month or so ago and thought it was decent enough to mention.

THE LAW ACCORDING TO LIDIA POET – Now

Can I just get this off my chest? Heart of Stone was atrociously bad. But, maybe this might take the path less traveled? We shall see. “In late 19th-century Turin, the young Lidia Poët, fights against everything and everyone to get what is rightfully hers: to be enrolled in the official register of lawyers. A profession, at the time, reserved exclusively for men. Nevertheless, nothing could stop her dream of becoming the first female lawyer in Italy.” Might dive a bit too much into gender politics for a 19th century historically based investigative show… but I’m alright with that.

Honorable Mentions – Lost in Translation made it over to Netflix. If you like downtrodden and low key… which, I do. (In the vein of Her, etc.) Depp vs. Heard, if you are into that sort of thing. Looks decent.

Previously on Spotlight Worth Mentioning:
BEYOND THE INFINITE TWO MINUTES – Indie hilarity perfectly executed
TELEMARKETERS – gritty HBO detective take down of “non-profit” telemarketers
BARBIE – lot’s of fire in the comments!! – check out my write up
THE BEAR S2 – such an epically great show… can’t recommend enough
APORIA – time travel (?) movie with a moral backbone, enjoyed!
TALK TO ME – an A24 Brilliant Horror flick. So good.
