Disturbance in the Force is a Mandatory StarWars Fan Requirement. For all you Star Wars fans out there… I’ve got a lovely documentary recommendation for you. A Disturbance in the Force is a 2023 documentary directed by Jeremy Coon and Steve Kozak.

The movie chronicles how the Dark Brandon film of the Star Wars universe got made. If you are a Star Wars fan, you have DEFINITELY heard of (though I’ll bet five bucks you have seen) the crazy Star Wars Holiday Special. The film was created for CBS and it was only aired once… November 17th, 1978, and then never again. And to say that the show was terrible, is doing a serious disservice to the word TERRIBLE. Horrible? Horrific? Mind Numbing? Tragic? These might be better descriptors.

The film is fantastic in that it explains how this car crash actually happened. The zeitgeist of the variety show moment. The desire to not let Star Wars fans not forget about A New Hope. And the lack of interest on Lucas’ part to be involved because he was too busy working on Empire Strikes Back. These and so many more reasons attempt, but don’t actually suffice, as an explanation for the horrors that became the Star Wars Holiday Special.

If you are intrigued, and just want to watch The Star Wars Holiday Special – don’t worry boo, I got you. You can watch it right here. (If the link ever goes down, just let me know, I have a copy I can point you to. And if you want to watch A Disturbance In the Force – you can find it right here:

While watching this documentary, I was just agog at the crazy number of inverted lottery roles necessary that came together to make the WORST POSSIBLE SHOW EVER come to pass. It’s actually quite magical. And magical in not a good way.
