On the cusp of 2024! And we have movies for your New Year’s Week. Gotta run, off to ski. Happy New Year!!
2023.12.25 FERRARI
It is the summer of 1957. Behind the spectacle of Formula 1, ex-racer Enzo Ferrari is in crisis. Bankruptcy threatens the factory he and his wife, Laura built from nothing ten years earlier. Their volatile marriage has been battered by the loss of their son, Dino a year earlier. Ferrari struggles to acknowledge his son Piero with Lina Lardi. Meanwhile, his drivers’ passion to win pushes them to the edge as they launch into the treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy, the Mille Miglia.
2023.12.22 FREUD’S LAST SESSION
“In his final days, Sigmund Freud, a recent escapee with his daughter from the Nazi regime, receives a visit from the formidable Oxford Don C.S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia). On this day, two of the greatest minds of the twentieth century intimately engage in a monumental session over the belief in the future of mankind and the existence of God.” This movie is based on the play – and not on a real meeting between the two titans. Which, um… sort of takes the piss out of this one for me (as the British are want to say.)
2023.12.22 ALL OF US STRANGERS
Adam Scott. This film begins and ends with Adam Scott. I’m sure you know him from the Sherlock series as Moriarty. But he was even better in the Fleabag series. So, yeah, this looks ültra. (You pronounce that – “umlaut ultra”.)
