Did you know that the number one hundred fifty five is my favorite number of all time? No. Actually it isn’t. But seeing as though you just normally scroll down to the title recommendations as fast as you can, and this is the RARE week that you even read the intro, and that alone is the only reason that you noticed. So happy 155th day! (I started a podcast – Check it out and subscribe if you get the chance. Really into it? Sign up for Patreon and get access to the videos of our in depth movie conversations.)
2024.02.16 MONOLITH – (STREAMING)
This is the most exciting movie of the week. This looks so legit. Cannot wait. “While trying to salvage her career, a disgraced journalist begins investigating a strange conspiracy theory. But as the trail leads uncomfortably close to home, she is left to grapple with the lies at the heart of her own story.” I think it’s the story of a podcaster even (near and dear to my heart) who spirals down a rabbit hole. I just purchased this one, and am halfway through it, and am adoring it so far. Single actress, closed box, fantastic storytelling, really nice conspiracy theories that come straight from the worlds of House of Leaves or something akin to VanderMeer’s Annihilation?
2024.02.16 IO CAPITANO – (THEATER)
Okay, Io Capitano looks pretty crazy. If you want to talk about a horror movie. This is real world horror of epic proportions.
2024.02.16 LAND OF BAD – (THEATER)
Sorry – not sure this is going to be any good. Not too interested based on the trailer. Please give me a shout if it’s worth a watch. Maybe I’m wrong?
2024.02.23 DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS – (THEATER)
I’m on record as not being an enormous Coen Brothers fan. But maybe, since this is only 1/2 of the Coen Brothers (Ethan), it’ll be the exactly right amount of Coen-ness? It actually looks pretty funny in its meta-references to Pulp Fiction and deconstruct other ultra-McGuffined films of its ilk. (Come on, a briefcase with something secret in it that is never revealed (aka, it’s a soul people, a glowing soul!)
Previously on Spotlight Worth Watching Right Now:
ZONE OF INTEREST – Single best World War II movie? I’m still reeling.
EILEEN – Everything might not be quite what it seems with Eileen
BLUE EYE SAMURAI – literally cannot stop talking about this series…
PAST LIVES – low key, slow burn, dialog driven film. Basically Before Sunrise??
SALTBURN – Brilliant. Brilliant. Enjoyed every minute.
