THiNC. Movie Spotlight 34 – Because you don’t have enough decent movies in your life, and you should. The THiNC. Movie Spotlight is eradicating cinematic pablum in your life, one movie at a time. This weeks Pablum-Eradicator brought to you by, hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin… the drugs helping Covid flourish across the planet! “Woah, wait, he just got crazy political Sally.” “I know Margo, it’s almost like he doesn’t want our money.” “Hey Margo and Sally… no, I don’t, and while we are chatting, please go get vaccinated.” Regardless you two, thanks for your support in keeping this site going day after day.
The Guilty – October 1 – Netflix – The Guilty is a Finnish closed box film that is utterly brilliant. Why do we know about a movie that hasn’t come out yet? Well, we’ve already talked about it before, and we had a blast doing it… the Finnish version that is. Want to watch the Finnish version first, no problem. This version of the film, the one coming out on October 1st, is being remade by Jake Gyllenhaal and Netflix. Gyllenhaal is enough to get me there (hell, the story is really the draw for me), but Netflix also brought in Ethan Hawke, Riley Keough, Paul Dano, and Peter Sarsgaard. OH. And by the way, they also brought along True Detective writer Pizzolatto, as well as Training Day director Fuqua. It’s going to be an epic ride.
Time to Hunt – Available Now – Netflix – In hopes of escaping a dystopian city and a chance at a new life, four friends with nothing to lose plan a casino heist. But what seemed like a bulletproof plan turns into a chase for their lives when they fall prey to a mysterious hunter who wants them dead. This Korean film looks off the hook crazy.
The Nest – Available Now – Amazon – “A beautiful young wife (Carrie Coon – amaze amaze amazing in Izzy Gets the F Across Town) begins to see through the social-climbing facade of her entrepreneur husband (Jude Law) in this tense domestic thriller from the director of MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE.” Lots to love here. Jude Law… duh. Carrie Coon… double duh. Martha Marcy May Marlene director??? Wow duh. Anyway, it looks like an ultra-smart, marital mindjob of a film. At least, at a remove anyway.
The Dark and the Wicked – Available Now – Prime – I’ve literally been staring at this one at the top of my movie watching list, for weeks now. I was going to keep it off the spotlight and was going to just do a write up on it, but have been overcome by events (interviews, writeups, top 100s, gah.) But this looks fantastic – “On a secluded farm in a nondescript rural town, a man is slowly dying. His family gathers to mourn, and soon a darkness grows, marked by waking nightmares and a growing sense that something evil is taking over the family.”
Kate – September 10th – Netflix – Kate might just be the single most anticipated movie of the fall that no one knows about. I mean, Dune is coming in September. Yadda yadda. Whatever. But KATE!? Kate looks like pure adrenaline chaos. “After she’s irreversibly poisoned, a ruthless criminal operative has less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her enemies and in the process forms an unexpected bond with the daughter of one of her past victims.”
