Last week we had a trio of interesting movies – Not Okay was a scathing commentary on the look at me culture. Resurrection, an insanity filled ride of guilt. And Vengeance, a hilarious true-crime podcast satire thing? Some decent films there. And today, we have more. You are welcome. Can’t wait to get to each one. And recently, I covered The Alpinist (insane), Spiderhead (interesting moral equivocating), and Nope (my favorite recent movie in a good long while…).
Bodies Bodies Bodies – 8.5
A24 is always a winner. When in doubt, assume that A24 will land the Hail Mary time and time again. And this looks like a real life version of the game fad – Among Us. Right? One of you is the murderer, avoid getting murdered while finding the murderer. IE, never be alone with only one other person. Duh. Should be a wild ride. Been waiting for this one for a while now.
Bullet Train – 8.5
Initial reviews of this one are very mixed, but EVERYONE says that Brad Pitt just lights this up regardless. And I’ve been a huge fan since his very first role (was it his first role??) as a stoner on True Romance – dang, he was hilarious in that movie. This looks like an action movie looking for a plot… but if you think you like the idea of Brad Pitt killing lots of bad guys while being funny along the way? Then you are in the right place.
Prey – 8.5
This is going to come as a surprise to some of you. And it’s a little embarrassing to admit this out loud. 1987 – when the original movie Predator came out – I thought it was the single coolest movie I’d ever seen. Yeah. See? Embarrassing. Watch it now, oh, it’s beyond awful. I even took a group of guys out for a Guy Movie Night to see the most recent one. We laughed so hard it was so, so abysmal. At that moment I knew the franchise was done. But now? I don’t know… dropping the predator into a competition with a female Native American? Huh. Maybe there’s a twitch of life in the franchise. I mean, we already know the formula… and now more than ever, the young lady HAS to obliterate this alien in fantastic form. (I mean, even the Ewoks beat the Empire after all…. cough.)
