THiNC. Movie Spotlight 125

Hey there gang! Spotlight number 125. Wherein I up periscope, and survey the cinematic landscape to see what might be out there in the land of technicolor and see if we can’t find you something interesting to watch today.

THEY CLONED TYRONE – 2023.7.20

This could be the must see THiNC. movie of the year?? (He says knowing full well that Oppenheimer is releasing a day AFTER this one.) Listen to this summary, “a blaxploitation-based cousin of Invasion of the Body Snatchers with a deeper sense of social consciousness, They Cloned Tyrone is a predominately grim yet intriguing account of constrained, little-hope lives victimized even further by nefarious secret attempts to transform them into obedient, well-behaved zombies.” Tyrone is currently in the theater – it will be on Netflix on the 20th.

OPPENHEIMER – 2023.07.21

Oppenheimer is the ten thousand pound gorilla in the THiNC. world this year. While it isn’t a time travel movie, or a dream layer movie, or a movie about two magicians portal time-traveling (read: it’s not a standard Nolan mindjob movie, it’s a historical framework movie), it still is a Nolan movie. And therefore, it’s going to be the single biggest movie of the year for this website and the group of people that frequent this site and care about a more complicated movie experience.

20 Days in Mariupol – 2023.07.16

The most telling element of “20 Days in Mariupol,” Ukrainian photographer Mystylav Chernov’s pulsating documentary about the first three weeks of a Russian siege that killed tens of thousands of people, is what soldiers make of Chernov and his team. At first the AP camera crew, the last journalists left in Mariupol, are a nuisance. As apartment buildings are evacuated. Chernov is told to “turn the cameras off” by Ukrainian soldiers he politely refers to as “shy.” He replies: “This is a historical war.” It’s out in quite a few locations during its limited screening – check out the list here. I’m DYING to see this film. If anyone sees a location in Colorado, or a digital release, please shout at me. I missed the Denver/March screenings.

Cobweb – 2023.07.21

“Eight-year-old Peter is plagued by a mysterious, constant tapping from inside his bedroom wall—one that his parents insist is all in his imagination. As Peter’s fear intensifies, he believes that his parents could be hiding a terrible, dangerous secret and questions their trust.”
