Hey there gang! Spotlight number 129. Wherein I up periscope, and survey the cinematic landscape to see what might be out there in the land of technicolor and see if we can’t find you something interesting to watch today.
LOLA – Available Now
Like the recent film, Aporia, and also 11 Minutes Ago, and etc., etc., – this film looks AWESOME. Soo good. Can’t wait to carve time out of my life to just sit down and watch it. “In 1941 England, two sisters invent a machine that intercepts broadcasts from the future. With World War II dawning, they use it to change history.”
BAD THINGS – 8.11.23
This description should sell itself – this sounds fantastic: “When a group of friends escapes the city to spend the weekend in an abandoned hotel, a pervading eerie energy begins to illuminate the cracks in their little family unit. Ruthie inherits the hotel from her grandmother, and with bad childhood memories threatening to burst to the surface, Ruthie wants to sell the hotel and never return. But her partner Cal drags her there, hoping to return it to its former glory. They are joined by their amiable friend Maddie and mysterious grifter Fran, whose unhinged seduction threatens to drive a wedge between the couple. As the friends dance, cook, flirt, and fight up and down the hotel halls, they find themselves indelibly entwined in the hotel’s seductive embrace and start doing bad things to each other.”
A COMPASSIONATE SPY – Available now
If you watched Oppenheimer – or read the book Nolan based the movie on – you’ll know that there was significant discussion about informing our World War II “Ally” – Russia – about our new atomic bomb capability. Welp… “Brilliant physicist Ted Hall is recruited to join the Manhattan Project while still a teenager and goes to Los Alamos with no clue what he’ll be working on. When he learns the true nature of the weapon being designed, he fears the post-war risk of a nuclear holocaust and begins to pass significant information to the Soviet Union.”
Madeleine Collins –
“Judith manages a busy double life between Switzerland and France. On the one hand, there’s Abdel, with whom she has a little girl, and on the other Melvil, with whom she has two older boys. Gradually, this delicate balancing act built on lies, secrets, and constant to-ing and fro-ing, starts cracking up under the pressure. Caught in a trap, Judith decides to run away from it all and her situation soon spirals out of control.”
Other somewhat interesting possibilities out this week?? Operation Napoleon, King on Screen, Birth/Rebirth, Dark Windows
