THiNC. Movie Spotlight 146. I recently went to the theaters and watched Minus One, which, even though I’m a huge Godzilla fan, I was not a fan of. But if you liked the original – like the first Godzilla movie, and want a spin on that? You might? Let me know what you think of it anyway. But I also went to the theaters to see Saltburn and holy cow what tectonic earthquake just happened??
2023.12.15 – ZONE OF INTEREST
Want a quick lesson in how to dive a layer deeper into independent film – and stay abreast the best way possible? Pick a movie that you love, memorize the director’s name (like Yorgos Lanthimos maybe or Terrence Malick maybe?), and the screenplay writer’s name (like Eric Heisserer, or Aaron Sorkin possibly?). Voila… when those two people do something new – watch it. (Setup a google alert even.) Simple. Want to take that skill to the next level? Track really good production companies (I like, Bleecker Street (the coming film ISS!) and Legendary (Dune Part 1 & 2!)). Welp, A24 is the number one production company to be watching in the Indie Film world. And yes, the idea of this film looks good, but it’s A24 so that seals the deal that this is going to be worth a watch.
2023.12.15 – WONKA
Confession time. I’ve never been a fan of the original Willie Wonka. Not the book. Not the movie. None of it. And while I am a MASSIVE Timothée Chalamet fan (Dune, Beautiful Boy, Lady Bird, The King, etc., etc.) I am betwixt and between as to whether or not I plan to even watch this. I mean. Can you say, childhood trauma? We will see.
2023.12.15 – FINESTKIND
“Finestkind tells the story of two half-brothers (Ben Foster and Toby Wallace), raised in different worlds, who are reunited as adults over a fateful summer. Set against the backdrop of commercial fishing, the story takes on primal stakes when desperate circumstances force the brothers to strike a deal with a violent Boston crime gang…” you had me until the last bit. I mean.. insert Macguffin bad guy here. Bah. But there are a ton of fantastic actors in this one. Ben Foster and Jenna Ortega my own personal favorites. We shall see. Streams on Paramount in a couple days.
