Top 25 Movie Mindjob Countdown – The One I Love

As I explained – in this much too long post – I have decided to mine the depths of this site’s intellectual movie capital of crazy awesome movies and craft a top 25 movies list. Now, this movies list will be unlike any other movie list you’ve ever seen. Why? Because Quality and Unknowness will be equally weighted. And I built an algorithm to find and surface the crazy mindjobs that no one has heard of so that I can bring them to you in this top twenty five countdown. Our list so far:

Can’t wait to see this list grow as we find more and more movies that are below your radar… And here is the total list of every movie published so far.

Number 24 – The One I Love

I’ve slowly begun to realize that I really love weird movies. I personally don’t think they are weird. But I understand now that my movie tastes don’t run with the public’s idea of good movie making. How did I learn this? Well, occasionally, in my real life, I’ll exuberantly recommend a crazy new movie that I’ve recently watched and am in love with, and a couple days later, I’ll be blocked on Twitter, my phone calls will be blocked, and they’ll avert their gaze and quickly run the other direction when I see them next. I remember the first time I recommended Primer, just assuming that it would be everyone’s new favorite movie. Imagine my shock and surprise when I discovered that that wouldn’t be the case.

Anyway, The One I Love is my gateway drug to all things mindjobby and mindblowing. It generally is sane enough for a buddy, and his wife, to wrap their heads around it. And yet, it has such an enormously mind blowing ending as to be one of my favorite movies of all time.

The setup is simple. A couple decides to go to a retreat center in order to find themselves and their love for one another from years past. When they arrive at this retreat home, they meet an identical copy of themselves. Or an almost identical copy of themselves shall we say…And what happens from there unravels their perspectives on their relationship and reality itself. And as I mentioned, it contains an ending that may just cause you all manner of sleepless nights, as you attempt to figure it out.

For those of you that have already seen it, but haven’t seen the well over 200 comments on my original review page – go join in. Some of those comments will turn your mind completely inside out. And if you are looking for a hint as to how to unlock this movie…a hint that won’t spoil it for you… follow the bacon. You’ll see. Happy viewing everyone. Please make sure you join in the conversation after you watch the movie and solve the riddle!!
