THiNC. Movie Spotlight #43 – Wherein Lisa and I kibitz in a closet for 3 minutes and out pops Spotlight #43… This one is going to need you to crack open your VPN though. So, there is that. But you are all grownups… you can handle that. Right? And thanks for supporting THiNC. by joining us on Patreon, or tossing a tip to keep the movies coming week after week. Because, this list? It has Dopesick in it. I mean, do I need better bona fides than that?? Is that even possible?
The Outlaws – only local on BBC – Only available via VPN – sign up for one right here and help THiNC. stay afloat. Outlaws takes seven characters from different backgrounds, sticks each of them in a red tabard, hands them a sweeping brush and watches as the inevitable culture clashes take place. “Everyone’s a type,” says Rani, the self-proclaimed “studious Asian good girl,” whose penchant for shoplifting earns her a hefty number of “community payback” hours. After VPN’ing in to England – go to the BBC iPlayer right here to watch. You are welcome. Christopher Walken looks divine here.
Angela Black – only local on BBC – Only available via VPN – sign up for one right here and help THiNC. stay afloat. On the surface, Angela (Joanne Froggatt from Downton Abby) seems to have a happy life with her husband Oliver. But the truth of their relationship is very different. Talking about the series, Joanne says: “She’s seemingly living this perfect life, and she’s got this lovely husband, house and children and from the outside, everything’s dreamy, but you scratch the surface and there’s much more going on underneath.” After VPN’ing in to England – go to the BBC iPlayer right here to watch. You are welcome.
Dopesick – Hulu – Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company That Addicted America (2018) examines how OxyContin use exploded in Appalachia in the 1990s and 2000s. When medical providers began restricting access to prescription opioids in the late 2000s and 2010s, many people turned to heroin. And look! You don’t even need to VPN to get to it. Oh, stop your crying.
Last Night in Soho – October 28 – I think Spotlight covered this one way back at Spotlight 25? Anyway, Soho arrives this Friday! And we couldn’t be more excited. This one begins, middles, ends, with Anya Taylor-Joy who is finally finding a wide audience after her winning take as a chess master in the Queen’s Gambit. But if you’d been reading here for a while, you would know that we’ve loved her in many other films; Thoroughbreds, Split, Glass, Morgan, Peaky Blinders, and The VVitch. But I’m also hearing amazing things about Last Night in Soho, really – really great things about this one and the gloriously different mindjobbery they have going on here. Set a reminder for this Friday.
