Seven Zero. That’s what? 350 movie recommendations? Half of them are meh (apparently Russian Doll season 2 from last week is in that category, but I’m still watching anyway). The other half are probably good – 175 good ones for those of you with scorecards. And of those good ones… I’d argue that we are averaging half again really good movies. Just solid, insightful, make you think, fantastically good films. *87.5 fantastically good films. And I would bet – that there is probably, something like – 20 or so earth-shakingly good films. (Like last week’s Everything Everywhere All at Once.) Long story short, there’s an awful lot of really great movies here – and some preternaturally amazing ones. You’ll never know what you’ll find until you start sifting. Or. You could join us over on Discord, and they’ll do the sifting for you – because they are thoughtful like that.
Shining Girls – April 29th!!!!!!!
First. This source material. Holy frick. Second, Elisabeth Moss. Now, If you know of my love affair with Moss (She anchored one of the most talked about films ever on this site – The One I Love. The Invisible Man. But what about The Handmaid’s Tale?? Oh, and US?? For heaven’s sake!) But I’m placing the book this is based on even above Moss? Yeah, I adored this book. Such great… bookage. I mean, I don’t even want to tell you if it’s a drama, or what. I don’t want to spoil any of it for you. Just trust me. This is going to be great.
Under the Banner of Heaven – April 28th
A devout detective’s faith is tested as he investigates a brutal murder seemingly connected to an esteemed Utah family’s spiral into LDS fundamentalism and their distrust in the government. Garfield is the reason we are here for this. This one is being talked about over in Discord (thanks Nancy!) Otherwise I would have never heard a thing about it.
Bang Bang Baby – April 28th
Whoops… Don’t speak Spanish? My bad. Let’s see if I can translate it for you shall we? hahaha: “Bang Bang Baby is a crime drama set in Milan at the end of the year Ottanta, and tells the story of Alice, a shy and alligator teenager who devours the enormous member of a criminal organization, not for popular, car crashes or many hateful popes that require flatulence.” Or something. I don’t know. Sort of lost the thread. But!!! This looks AMAZING! But don’t accidentally rent the 2014 musical movie of the same name. This one is apparently in Spanish. Got it?
Undone Season 2 – April 29th
The scenes themselves were shot on minimal sets, which allows animators to superimpose whatever kind of design they want. Rose Salazar, who plays Alma, has worked on visually heavy projects before, like Alita: Battle Angel. She says she loves working on projects like Undone: “Obviously, I’d been animated before.”
