Just Started Fall of the House of Usher on Netflix

Just Started Fall of the House of Usher on Netflix, and I absolutely love it. This isn’t a proper walk through, or recommendation. To do that will require me to actually watch it… which, I haven’t done yet. (Well, why don’t you wait then until you do watch it? BECAUSE I WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT IT BEFORE HALLOWEEN, DANGIT.)

Look… I get it I’m not done yet watching The Fall of the House of Usher. But… let me give you a list of reasons as to why I don’t even really need to finish it in order to fully recommend it to you. OK? So here’s a list of reasons:

  1. Midnight Mass
  2. The Haunting of Hill House
  3. Midnight Club
  4. The Haunting of Bly Manor
  5. Doctor Sleep

Etc. Etc. Etc. And the fact that this is Halloween season and it’s the PERFECT time for a hauntingly dark, and disturbing watch? Definitely a perfect season for The Fall of the House of Usher.

Last night I watched the first episode and there are just so many fantastic scary moments that I live for in shows like this. Those moments, when you know something is there, but you can’t see it yet? And then there’s that subtle shift, and your heart literally flips? Like, tumbles out of your chest? So great. There were several of those in the first episode alone.

And if you look back at the Haunting of Bly Manor, or The Haunting of Hill House? There were a million ghosts and haunted moments that you didn’t even see… you didn’t even pick up on. The fans even made a game of counting all the ghosts that were possible to spot throughout the show that just flew by under the radar. But my favorite sort of haunted house movies are some of the more subtle scares. Sure, jump me out of my chair… I’m cool with that. I dig it. But the really clever scares are harder to detect… and that is what the writer and director Mike Flanagan is all about.

So, yeah, I plan to continue watching as the month progresses further along towards Halloween. But you have to check out the show now, because if you enjoyed Midnight Mass, Hill House, or Bly Manor, then I’m already certain you’ll enjoy The Fall of the House of Usher as well!

Potential Spoiler? – I currently have a guess about how the show is going to end. Scroll down a bit to read my totally unsubstantiated or uncorroborated theory. My only ask? Don’t pop into the comments and spoil it for me… (or anyone else, but mainly me! hahah.)

So, the show is setup pretty early on that Roderick and Madeline Usher are the illegitimate children from their mother’s relationship with her horribly evil boss. Roderick is haunted by a woman from his past, and soon after the hauntings start, family members begin dying. Right? Pretty great setup.

And, knowing what I know about the Flanagan haunted house universe… I’m betting, that the woman that is haunting Roderick isn’t who she appears to be. I think her name is Verna (Carla Gugino), but I’m betting she’ll turn out to be someone other than “Verna.” Notice that Verna (as of ep1, that’s all I’ve seen so far) is normally wearing a mask… and is shrouded, or covered. I think it means she’ll be revealed to be someone else. And my guess? It will be Eliza (played by Annabeth Gish), why? Well, if you look at the episode list, she’s the actress that is in the least number of episodes. And as the most religious member of the family, I think it’ll be revealed that she’s taking revenge? We’ll just have to see. Can’t wait to get time in my life to continue watching!
