The Veil is Much Watch Television. Quickest hot take ever? The Veil is a more realistic, more dramatic version of Killing Eve. Oh, and by the way, you are welcome for the recommendation… just go watch it. Thanks.

The Veil follows the relationship between two women playing a deadly game of truth and lies. One woman has a secret, and the other has a mission to reveal it before thousands of lives are lost. Got it? Lives are on the line.

Why are lives on the line? Well, it would seem, that Yumna Marwan plays the role of Adilah El Idrissi, and maybe… just maybe, should/could possibly be the Djinn al Raqqa. The Djinn? You know, a Middle Eastern genie? Spirit? Demon? The formal definition of a djinn is “an intelligent spirit of lower rank than the angels, able to appear in human and animal forms and to possess humans.” (Random trivia? I’ve been using Djinn as my online nick for 30 years – okay, so “online” meant BBS’s back then… your point??) And who is this Djinn al Raqqa exactly? Well, she is one of the only upper-level military Isis leaders that has been hunted by Western countries for years… and responsible for the deaths of countless individuals.

And Imogen Salter (played by Elizabeth Moss), what is her deal? She’s the MI-6 agent? Question mark?? Could she just be a compassionate NGO worker? No no… she’s MI-6. Or maybe a CIA agent? Is her accent bouncing around? Regardless, we know that Imogen is hunting the Djinn, and when everyone else has given up the chase, Imogen’s dog bite grip won’t let go.

You know how in Killing Eve, the brilliance of it was the psychological play between those two women? The same goes here as well… but to a deeper level. It’s a masterclass of acting both on Moss’ part, and also Marwan’s. The give and take is subtle and nuanced. The chess game that these two undertake is really great. There are currently three eps out right now, and I’ve adored all three so far. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next three.
