This is it. The top 5 Netflix documentaries of all time — according to me, backed by Rotten Tomatoes, and verified by the fact that I’ve watched all of them multiple times. #5 to #1. The best of the absolute best. Let’s finish this.

Netflix Documentary #5 — The Pez Outlaw

2022 | Film | Directed by Amy & Bryan Storkel

100% from critics and 91% from audiences. Steve Glew made millions smuggling rare PEZ dispensers from Eastern Europe. Yes, PEZ dispensers. The documentary treats this quirky premise with all the gravity of a cartel takedown, and it WORKS. The reenactments are clever, the storytelling is tight, and Glew himself is an irresistible screen presence. This is what happens when brilliant filmmakers find a perfect subject.

Netflix Documentary #4 — The Program

2024 | Series | Directed by Katherine Kubler

100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Program follows survivors of abusive ‘troubled teen’ programs — wilderness camps and residential treatment centers that used brutal methods on vulnerable kids. The testimonies are devastating, and the systemic failures exposed here are criminal. This is investigative documentary at its most important and most infuriating.

Netflix Documentary #3 — The Square

2013 | Film | Directed by Jehane Noujaim

100% from critics with 70 reviews. The Egyptian Revolution of 2011 captured from inside Tahrir Square by the protesters themselves. It’s urgent, chaotic, beautiful, and heartbreaking — watching people fight and die for democracy in real time. The footage is unprecedented. Over a decade later, it remains one of the most powerful political documentaries ever made.

Netflix Documentary #2 — Trust Me: The False Prophet

2026 | Series | Directed by Rachel Dretzin

100% from critics (only 2 reviews — brand new). A cult expert and her husband infiltrate a polygamist sect to expose the crimes of Warren Jeffs’ self-proclaimed heir. It’s 2026’s most compelling true crime series so far. The undercover element adds a layer of tension that most cult docs don’t have. Still building its review count, but the early consensus is strong.

Netflix Documentary #1 — Virunga

2014 | Film | Directed by Orlando von Einsiedel

And here we are — Netflix Documentary #1. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with 47 critics. Virunga follows the rangers protecting endangered mountain gorillas in the Congo, and it’s one of the most visually stunning, emotionally devastating, and politically important documentaries ever made. It has everything — wildlife conservation, corporate greed, armed conflict, and human courage. Von Einsiedel (who also directed The Lost Children on this list) created something that transcends the genre. If you watch nothing else from this list, watch Virunga. It’s the best Netflix documentary, period.

And there you have it — I have loved watching along as we posted these documentaries one at a time. Icarus will always hold a special place in my heart even though it wasn’t ranked as high with critics… but my favorite in the top 10 would definitely be Trust Me: The False Prophet. Just wild insanity right there. How are these stories happening all around us?
