As I explained – in this much too long post – I have decided to mine the depths of this site’s intellectual movie capital of crazy awesome movies and craft a top 25 movies list. Now, this movies list will be unlike any other movie list you’ve ever seen. Why? Because Quality and Unknowness will be equally weighted. And lucky for you, I built an algorithm to find and surface the crazy mindjobs that no one has heard of so that I can bring them to you in this top twenty five countdown. Our list so far:
- 15. Under the Skin
- 16. Enemy
- 17. Bad Times at the El Royale
- 18. Stay
- 19. The Endless
- 20. Timecrimes
- 21. In Darkness
- 22. I am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House
- 23. Time Lapse
- 24. The One I Love
- 25. The Exam
Can’t wait to see this list grow as we find more and more movies that are below your radar… And here is the total list of every movie published so far.
Number 15 – Under the Skin
Under the Skin might just be the most well known movie on this list. I mean it does feature Scarlett Johansson after all. But like Enemy, which we talked about last time, sometimes popular actors take a straight up gamble on an ‘art-house flick’ in order to bolster their acting reputation. It’s like when actors decide to take a turn on Broadway…similar deal. But regardless, Under the Skin was so experimental, and so out there, as to 86 its own success at the box. Speaking of which, the box office was a paltry $2.6 million against a production budget of $13.3 million.
The movie tells the story of a woman, fly-trapping men throughout Glasgow and then devouring their souls afterwards. Or something. No really, it might be about an alien race subverting the humans of earth. It might be about some sort of a feminist revenge agenda where women seek out rapists and predators to see out revenge against them. Or maybe it’s about a race of predator penguins for all I know. What I do know is that this movie requires a ton of thought, and even after you are done thinking about it, you’ve only just started. Trust me, I spent hours thinking about it, and I’m still unsure as to what I think about it.
If after you watch it, you need fellow confused cinema fans to commiserate with, come join us over here, and we may even share a beer as we cry about this chaotic movie.
