THiNC. Movie Spotlight 121

Hey there gang! Spotlight number 121. Wherein I up periscope, and survey the cinematic landscape to see what might be out there in the land of technicolor and see if we can’t find you something interesting to watch today.

THE BLACKENING – 06.18.23

The Blackening centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherf****** game. The Blackening skewers genre tropes and poses the sardonic question: if the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, who dies first?

MAD HEIDI – 06.21.23

The Heidi story moved the hearts of whole generations around the world. But meanwhile Heidi has grown up, just like us. She ain’t no sweet little kid anymore. In the near future the world is sinking into war and chaos, but Switzerland has sealed itself off as an island of the rich. A despotic cheese magnate is ruling the country with an iron fist to maintain an artificial postcard-image of Switzerland.

GOD IS A BULLET – 06.23.23

This movie looks unruly as all get out. Like. Indecently out of control. “When vice detective Bob finds his ex-wife murdered and daughter kidnapped by a satanic cult – he’s frustrated by bumbling botched investigations. Bob quits the police force, gets tattoos, and infiltrates the cult to hunt down the charismatic cult leader.” come. on. That sounds off the hook.

PERSIAN LESSONS – Nowish? But Not?

OK. This movie hasn’t found a distribution in the United States… yet. 1942. Gilles (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart), a young Belgian man, is arrested by the SS alongside other Jews and sent to a concentration camp in Germany. He narrowly avoids execution by swearing to the guards that he is not Jewish, but Persian. This lie temporarily saves him, but then Gilles is assigned a seemingly untenable mission: to teach Farsi to Koch (Lars Eidinger), the officer in charge of the camp’s kitchen, who dreams of opening a German restaurant in Iran once the war is over. Only glitch? He doesn’t speak Persian, so he teaches him a made up language?

I know that you can find it over on the German Apple TV? And a couple other places, but you’ll probably need a VPN and some ingenuity to make it happen. I might also know another way or two if you need a hand on how to find it.
