THiNC. Movie Spotlight #47 – Still surprises me that mid-pandemic, humanity has continued to pump out movie after movie of really interesting topics and insights. Today we have a modern day movie about seven men that become slaves. (Sorry, it’s heart-rending even considering this story.) The two movies that really stopped me cold though? Two that I will unreservedly recommend? Encanto, and Boiling Point. Encanto, because duh. And Boiling point because it’s a one shot boiling pot of stress and chaos. I really enjoyed that, and we had a great time talking about it over on Discord. Thanks for choosing to support THiNC. either by donating or joining my Patreon. Appreciate you guys.
Seven Prisoners – Netflix
To provide a better life for his family in the country, 18-year-old Mateus accepts a job in a junkyard in São Paulo for his new boss, Luca, but becomes trapped in the dangerous world of human trafficking.
The Humans – releasing 11/24
A24, A24, A24. You will never go wrong just blindly watching whatever A24 releases. The Humans tells the story of three generations gathered to celebrate Thanksgiving in lower Manhattan. As darkness falls outside, and eerie things start to go bump in the night, the group’s deepest fears are laid bare. It is adapted from writer-director Stephen Karam’s Tony Award-winning play. The Humans totally investigates our fear and love for family.
I’m Your Man –
Germany’s submission for best International film for the Oscars – I’m Your Man is an interesting existential question. Alma is a scientist at Berlin’s famous Pergamon Museum. In order to obtain research funds for her studies, she accepts an offer to participate in an extraordinary experiment. For three weeks, she must live with a humanoid robot with artificial intelligence designed to allow it to morph into that of her ideal life partner. Enter Tom, a machine in human form, created to make her happy.
Ascension – watch online
Love me some documentary goodness. “The absorbingly cinematic Ascension explores the pursuit of the “Chinese Dream.” This observational documentary presents a contemporary vision of China that prioritizes productivity and innovation above all.” Because capitalism is always good… right? Yeah… sure it is.
Boiling Point –
In the spirit of Birdman, One Shot, and other seemingly single shot filmed movies, Boiling Point dials up the stress in the single busiest day of a kitchen’s year. This looks amazing to me, but I’m a sucker for single shot movies as I’ve established before. So take this recommendation with a grain of salt.
Encanto – Theaters
Look. Coco was one of the best animated movies of all time. I don’t want to hear complaints that THiNC. has turned to the dark-side by starting to recommend “kids”movies. Don’t even. Coco’s screenplay was glorious. The animation was glorious. The music was beyond the pale, oh, and also glorious. Everything about it was perfectly magical. Encanto looks cut from the same magical cloth. It’ll only be available in theaters, starting today, and then there exclusively for the next 30 days… and then I believe it will be on Disney+?? Watch it. I’m betting you a dollar you’ll like it.
Coming Soon – Watch List:
Silent Night – December 3rd – VOD?

Encounter – December 10th – Prime
