I love the number 18. Yeah, no, it’s not my lucky number or anything. It’s just the date most of these movie and show recommendations are coming out. And so, today…? Boy do I love the number 18! And there are some really, REALLY REALLY great movies and shows in this list. (Here’s a hint, I don’t always think my Spotlights are that amazing. Sometimes they are okay… sometimes they are good. But today? This is a great list.) So great that I’m going to subtly, and inconspicuously, place this little donation button right here… cough.
Severance – (series) February 18th
Thanks, Chris, for tipping me to this one because this looks delicious. How far would you go to perfect your work/life balance? What about taking a drug that bifurcates your memory between home and work? Me? I’m in, sign me up. I mean, what could possibly go wrong here? I know right? Easy choice to make! This looks really really good. Sort of in alignment with Glasshouse, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, etc etc.
Ambulance – February 18th
I have a bit of a bromance happening with Jake Gyllenhaal – like, sort of an unhealthy, totally inappropriate fascination with the guy. Sure, this movie was created by Michael Bay… sure, it might be totally action movie cheese-fest. But the fact that Jake Gyllenhaal is in it means that it immediately gets indie-street-cred from me. Velvet Buzzsaw, Nocturnal Enemies, Life, but the movie to rule them all? Enemy. This looks like a great ride regardless of the Michael Bay seasoning that will inevitably come with this particular dish.
Pursuit – February 18th
John Cusack. Full stop. He’s here. I’m here. He could be coming through this movie on a walker… I’m in. “Detective Breslin crosses paths with Calloway, a ruthless hacker who’s trying to save his kidnapped wife from a drug cartel. When Calloway escapes from police custody, Breslin joins forces with a no-nonsense cop to reclaim his prisoner.”
Uncharted – February 18th
First things first… movies based on video games generally suck. But the actors, the team, … maybe this one will turn the corner? It’s generally getting crushed over on Rottentomatoes by critics, so that story checks out. But hey, maybe you are a secret Wahlberg fan… secretly. Maybe you haven’t even admitted it to your spousal unit… or friends. (Literally, this is one of the funniest scenes in the history of cinematography, you’re welcome.)
Ted K – February 18th
One word. Sharlto Copley. What’s a Sharlto Copley? Uh. District 9 anyone? One of my favorite indie action/sci-fi movies ever. Sharlto Copley is playing the role of Ted Kaczynksi, and his life in Lincoln, Montana, in the years leading up to his arrest as The Unabomber. Personally looks like an amazing story to tell, and can’t think of a better person for this role than Copley.
