THiNC. Movie Spotlight #50 – we should give out trophies at number fifty. Someone purchase some Goodwill trophies. This should happen right now so we are ready for the celebration. Janice? Purchasing depawwtment? Can we get some Trophies in here? In lieu of trophies… how about we do some movie recommendations? Fantastic then. This list had a TON of big movies here. I adored The Novice – totally loved unpacking that one. After Love was very outside the box, crazy good movie. Nightmare Alley definitely had me all atwitter, but ultimately had issues with it, even though Guillermo Del Toro is always amazing. And The Lost Daughter was complicate as all get out… I think the only movie on this week’s list I haven’t watched is Mother Android. Gotta get to that one.
The Novice – November 17th
The Novice, which was adored in its festival run, apparently takes on the story of a freshman who becomes obsessed with making it onto her university’s rowing team. And apparently, she undergoes a near herculean effort to make it to the top varsity boat. Personally? That wouldn’t sell me on this movie, but this trailer? It shows it’s telling a totally different story than the bare-bones of it suggest. Seems like this is a thriller of the darkest order. Should be a fun ride as we watch this freshman become the best regardless of the cost. Looks like The Novice will release on both streaming and a limited theatrical run.
Pixie –
Like a little more dark comedy in your life? This one comes from Lisa – THANKS LISA! I’ve got you covered with Pixie. It’s a thriller/comedy with some crime, and mystery sprinkled all throughout. Pixie Hardy (played by Olivia Cooke – who turned heads in this role) wants to avenge her mother’s death. And, in so doing, she’ll finally be able to leave her small town. But when things go all kinds of pear-shaped, she ends up on the run.
After Love –
I think I might have mentioned After Love before… or spent a disproportionately large amount of time just trying to find this movie prior to its release. One or the other. Which basically is like me just saying… I either told you about this movie, or spent all of my day just talking to myself about this one in my own head. One or the other (IE, I’m either sane, or completely insane. One or the other.) ANNNNY WAYYYYY. CY is recommending us this one, which means its 100% a winner. Just go watch it. I’m not even going to tell you about it. (yup, spotlight #21 – but you know what? CY is worth a re-mention dang it… and 99% of you didn’t even listen to me the first time, but I’m sure most of you will listen to CY.)
Nightmare Alley – Theaters December 17th
CY, did you tell me about this one as well? I think you did. But this is a big big release, and I’m guessing lots of you already have this on your watch list. I mean, look at this cast! Bradley Cooper, Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Paul Anderson, Toni Collette, etc., etc. The movie tells the story of “an ambitious carny with a talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words who hooks up with a female psychiatrist who is even more dangerous than he is.”
The Lost Daughter – Netflix December 17th
Marie E Friedman! Thanks so much for recommending that we highlight this in the spotlight. You are the best… this looks fantastic. “A college professor confronts her unsettling past after meeting a woman and her young daughter while on vacation in Italy. Her obsession with the woman and her daughter prompts memories of her early motherhood.”
Mother/Android – December 17th – Hulu
Honorable mention? Dunno – can’t tell if this one will be any good or not. Trailer looks decent? Let me know if you guys watch this one. In the future, androids become normal, until they revolt and hunt humans like zombies – but super fast, super strong. So super bad?
