There is a lot going on in the control room of THiNC. I’ve been in the throws of the most intense interviewing of my life (look – humanity – um… I hate to say this, but interviews are cruel. And unusual. They are cruel and unusual punishments. I wouldn’t wish them on death row inmates. Gah.) Also, Chris is hellabusy with, you know. Life. Lisa is mean to me, and refuses to do ANY clerical work. I mean, what is that? Hahahaha. Nancy won’t talk to me anymore… something about my life choices. Which, is fair. I get that.
And you could see Spotlight 20 as a filler. Sure. You could consider it fluff. But no. This is not that. This is where you learn about four recent flicks that I’m pretty sure you missed. These are movies that come from my list of THiNC. recommendations that have less views than the rest. And these are little movies you should care about dangit. So care!
We’ve Forgotten More Than We Ever Knew – 2017 – Oh come on. I told you this list was going to be good. WFMTWEK is one of those perfect indie films that I loved so much I went and found (or he found me? It all blurs) Thomas Woodrow and got him to talk to me about it. The story is about…. no. I will not distill this movie into a bite size chunk for you. I won’t do it. Just go watch it over on prime right now. So good. When movies dance this dance between the literal and the figurative – and lightly move back and forth between the two – while still telling a very literal reality about our lives today? That is the place where movies become magic for me. And that is what We’ve Forgotten More Than We Ever Knew is all about.
Hereditary – 2018 – Woah, the gods of the list have spun us in a totally different direction with Hereditary. This one is more widely known than anything else on this list. But if you haven’t seen it, come see Toni Collette go absolutely stark raving mad. When the matriarch of the Graham family passes away, her family begin completely unraveling as they start uncovering mysterious secrets about their family’s heritage. Literally, this film is a complete horror fantasy. This is in the land of Midsommar? So, go in aware, that this thing is pretty out of control – read my review here. And you can watch it here.
Never Here – 2020 – Miranda Fall is an installation artist who photographs and documents the lives of strangers. She pretends to be the key witness to a violent crime after her secret lover witnesses the act from her apartment window. Rear Window anyone? Check out my walkthrough right here. The Endless – 2017 – Synchronic, Resolution, Spring, She Dies Tomorrow, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead goodness movie goodness. The Endless and Resolution are two movies that occupy the same weird headspace, both brilliant in their own ways. If you aren’t familiar with their oeuvre then you really ought to pull your head out of the sand. These guys can drop a mindjob like nobodies business. The Endless is brilliant in that it follows as to guys who successfully left a cult, willingly go back in hopes of closure. But when they arrive, they have to reconsider whether or not this cult might actually have something to it or not.
