As I explained – in this much too long post – I have decided to mine the depths of this site’s intellectual movie capital of crazy awesome movies and craft a top 25 movies list. Now, this movies list will be unlike any other movie list you’ve ever seen. Why? Because Quality and Unknownness will be equally weighted. And lucky for you, I built an algorithm to find and surface the crazy mindjobs that no one has heard of so that I can bring them to you in this top twenty five countdown. Right? So yes, the top 25 movie mindjob countdown – The Jacket. Our list so far:
- 12. The Jacket
- 13. Frequencies
- 14. Unknown
- 15. Under the Skin
- 16. Enemy
- 17. Bad Times at the El Royale
- 18. Stay
- 19. The Endless
- 20. Timecrimes
- 21. In Darkness
- 22. I am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House
- 23. Time Lapse
- 24. The One I Love
- 25. The Exam
Can’t wait to see this list grow as we find more and more movies that are below your radar…And here is the total list of every movie published so far.
Number 12 – The Jacket
The story starts out simply enough – and then goes into full-on brain-breaking mode. A military veteran returning from war, heads back to his home in Vermont after suffering stints of amnesia. After getting locked up for murder, he finds himself in a sanitarium. (Are they still called sanitariums? I don’t think they are. Insane Asylum? Madhouse? Coo-coo-Club? I don’t know what they are called today. Just asylum? Anyway, I digress.)
While in said institution, his doctor doses him heavily with an experimental drug, straps him down in a straight jacket, and stores him in a morgue like body drawer. The kicker? This “treatment” causes him to time travel into the future and allows him to see his own death. Yup. That is a good set up.
And the fact that Adrien Brody, and Keira Knightley headline this movie means it has GOT to at least have fantastic acting going for it. But the movie made $6 million domestically, against a budget of $29 million! It just wasn’t a movie that anyone watched.
The best part? It’s an epic mindjob. The left hooks have their own left hooks. It’s a mindjob squared. (I always assumed that a mindjob to the power of 2 would just be the definition of normal. Like, it would invert back on itself so hard that it’d just be an average day, no?) But that is what we love here at THiNC. Movies that make you think. Movies that make you say, well, wait, WHAT?!? Because those kinds of movies are way better than normal. At least I think so anyway. And that is the 12th entry in our march towards number one.
Still don’t believe me it’s good – check out these reviews, and most specifically, THIS ONE, and they may change your mind. Better yet, after you watch it, join us over here, and discuss what that enigmatic ending might possibly mean.
