Now, this movies list will be unlike any other movie list you’ve ever seen. Why? Because Quality and Unknownness will be equally weighted. And lucky for you, I built an algorithm to find and surface the crazy mindjobs that no one has heard of so that I can bring them to you in this top twenty five countdown. Right? Number 5 – We’ve Forgotten More Than We Ever Knew
My movie tastes generally don’t wander too far afield into the avant garde. Says me, anyway. I mean, practically speaking, I try to bring you small films with big ideas, that are Picasso moving picture shows. I guess there was that one time I did a review of The Music of Chance…and if that thing wasn’t a Picasso Picture Show then I don’t know what is. But GENERALLY speaking, I don’t go there. More realistically, I play in the closed box, small set, small cast world, where budgets are small, but the screenplay is huge, world. You know, like Primer – which was made for like $7k. Or $12k, depending on who you ask.
But today, We’ve Forgotten More Than We Ever Knew, heads out to the border of the Picasso Picture Show land, only to veer sharply back and reveal itself as something entirely different. I found the movie so transfixing, and so fantastic – and I bloviated about it for so long – that the Writer and Director of the film, Thomas Woodrow, hunted me down and demanded an interview. (OK, so that isn’t exactly how it happened…but it was close.)
If you are looking to find this rarest of rare unicorns of movies – you’ll need to be sharp. Your senses will have to be honed to perfection, and your hunter gatherer instincts will have to been on the alert. Or I guess you could click one of the following links, here, here, here, or here. But I loved everything about this movie. It’s a mindjob’s mindjob just in the keeping up with it. It’s an allegory within a morality tale? Or maybe it’s just a cautionary story heralding the end of the world. I don’t know. That’s the brilliance of this little film from our friend, Thomas Woodrow. It could be anything, everything, and nothing…all at once. And depending on the baggage you bring to it, who knows what you might see in this Rorschach test of a movie.
