I hate reading top ten lists that inevitably come at the end of the year. Every blog from here to Tajikistan and back are running them right now. Best underated and undetected video games of the year. Best books for travelers for 2014. Best paying jobs of 2014 and beyond. Greatest overlooked vacations spots. Marginally good, but not great kayak deals. The Greatest Mountain trails you missed in 2014 and haven't the endurance to get to in 2015. You get the idea.
Curious what to get the Geek Guy You Love (GGYL)? Well, I have geek credentials coming out my ears. If you would like me to flaunt my Geek Cred for you, I could. But if you are desperate to purchase something for your loved one. And he's a geek. Then you've come to the right place. Promise. Any one of these items will just spontaneously blow your guy's mind. Promise.
Daily Paper Sculptures by Charles Young - This post is in defense of doing something every single day. And by everyday, I mean, literally, every single day. Don't stop. When you do something (anything) every day, you can quickly amass something truly impressive.
Well, it appears that Christopher Nolan has officially been offered the Director role for the movie version of the book Ready Player One. You can read more about it on the Tracking Board if you are interested in what few details they have released. First, if you are the last person on earth to read the book Ready Player One just stop reading this post and turn around and get the book pronto.
Yelp Troll Reviews of World Renowned Art Galleries - Every now and again I lough out loud at internet trolls. They really are amazing. Flame wars at the bottom of articles on CNN are just the beginning of the amazingness.
Not too long ago I talked about my bucket list and the chance I had to check off an item from the list. The question I have is this - if you get a chance to do a bucket list item twice, do you get extra credit, or are you deducted for not completing the list first? It looks like I have a chance to circle the globe again. This time though, it will be the other way around... maybe that's a different item?
So if there are legal world wide distribution issues, and damage to the negative issues... what's a fan to do? Create Your Own, Apparently. And that is what one fan has done. I have it on good authority, let's call this authority "A FRIEND OF MINE", that not only is this "Despecialized" version is a possibility, it is in fact a reality.
Banksy In New York Book Available - “Banksy in New York” by writer and photographer Ray Mock is the ultimate companion to Banksy’s month-long project on the streets of New York in October, 2013.
The Death of the American Pantheon - Growing up, I fell in love with comic books as most American teenage males did. I was a pretty big Batman fan. No, that didn't come out right. I was an amazingly out of control Batman fan. I walked side by side with Bruce as The Joker emptied Arkham and Bane broke his back. I was there as Robin died. As a new Robin was recruited and died again. I saw as the books turned darker and darker... the epitome of noir. And watched as the comic printing presses just pumped more and more books into an already over saturated market. I'll get back to that point in a moment.
Get The Bird Box Scared Out Of You - Occasionally you find a book that you dig and so you tell a few people about it. Right? And then you forget that you've even read them. And when people ask whether they should read it you say... yeah, sure. It's good. But whatever you are reading right now instantly over rights that particular recommendation. MOST books are kinda like that. Right? They are good. You enjoy them... but when they are gone they lose some of that intensity.
Eggers Wallace Rift and Restoration? Eggers initially wrote a flaming critique of David Foster Wallace's novel Infinite Jest. Ten years later he was given the foreword to the anniversary edition of the novel. The two different perspectives on the novel are conspicuously different. Here they are together in the same place for the first time.
Linklater's Game Changing Movie Boyhood - When Linklater went looking for his acting talent he made everyone agree to meet once a summer for twelve years in advance. To my knowledge nothing like this has ever been done before. The commitment necessary to pull this movie off was outstanding. And yet, it is still basically an unknown movie. I highly doubt that it will be an enormous hit in the theaters even though it should be.
An Open Letter To Shane Carruth - wherein a serious fan boy writes out questions for one of the world's great directors to answer if ever the bottle washes up on his shore.
The Bible Experiment Numbers - an experiment wherein I go through each book of the Bible in order to grapple with the details and the complications of that particular book of the Bible.
